  • Enhanced safety and cleaning measures are in place to keep customers and crew safe.

Booking ahead and arriving at the terminal

Reservations are limited and often sell out on our more popular sailings. We strongly recommend that you book ahead if you plan to travel during popular sailing times, including:
 
  • Holiday weekends
  • Thursday and Friday afternoons and evenings
  • Sunday afternoons
Booking in advance secures a spot for your vehicle on board your preferred sailing. Without a booking, vehicles are loaded in order of arrival at the terminal on the next available sailing. This may result in wait times at the departure terminal, especially during popular sailing times.
 

Not all routes can be booked in advance. When you select the route you plan to travel, you will see if it can be booked or not.

The availability of space on a sailing varies based on the time of day, holidays, weather conditions, and more. You can keep an eye on current conditions before you travel to see the space available on our sailings.

IMPORTANT: Check-in times

To avoid missing your sailing, find and view the specific check in times for your departure terminal.

  • Check-in time information can be found on terminal pages for foot passengers and all vehicle types, whether travelling with or without a booking

Whether you booked ahead of time or not, your first step upon arriving at the terminal is to check in with a ticket agent.

Self-serve payment stations for foot passengers accept debit, credit card and Experience Cards. They are available at these terminals:

When boarding begins, the gate will open and your boarding pass will be collected as you board the ferry.

Bookings, cancellations and confirmations

Booking confirmation
After booking, you'll receive a confirmation by email with all of your travel details.

When you arrive at the terminal, please let us know that you have a booking, and provide your booking reference number, or the phone number that you used when booking.
Booking fees & payment options
The earlier you book, the lower your reservation fee on routes between the Mainland and Vancouver Island. Where applicable, a $10 or $17 booking fee will apply.

When you book online, some routes offer the option of paying the entire fare up-front, including the booking fee, or just paying the booking fee. If you only pay for the booking fee online, the remainder of your fare will be due at the ticketing booth when you arrive at the terminal.

For travel between Vancouver (Tsawwassen) and the Southern Gulf Islands and on our northern routes, full pre-payment of fares is required at the time of booking.

Our ticketing booths accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and debit.
Changing or cancelling your booking
You can make changes to your bookings online, login to your account, or refer to your booking confirmation email for information if you do not have an account. Alternatively you can call 1-888-BC FERRY (1-888-223-3779).

Cancelled sailings
We'll do our best to get you on the next available sailing if yours is cancelled.

Scheduled sailings may need to be cancelled from time-to-time as a result of heavy weather conditions, mechanical difficulties or other unforeseen circumstances. If you check-in for your reservation and the sailing is cancelled, we will make every effort to load you on the next available sailing.

Customers with a reservation on the next scheduled departure will be loaded in advance of customers from the cancelled sailing. If we are unable to load you on the next available sailing, travel will revert to a first-come, first-served basis. If you choose not to travel, your fares will be fully refunded.

If your sailing is cancelled before you check-in, your reservation will be cancelled and your reservation fee will be refunded. Travel will revert to a first-come, first-served basis.

Medical Assured Loading Program

The BC Ferries Medical Assured Loading (MAL) program, in conjunction with the BC Government’s Travel Assistance Program (TAP), offers priority loading for those in need of critical medical care.

Important:

  • A patient’s doctor must apply for Medical Assured Loading through BC Ferries (patients are unable to make the request on their own).
  • Those who meet the criteria will be provided with a Medical Assured Loading letter to be presented to the ticket agent at time of check-in.
  • Those who meet the criteria are also required to download and complete a Travel Assistance Program (TAP) form.

Waitlists

Waitlists are available on bookable Northern and Southern Gulf Island sailings. If a sailing is full, you can add yourself to a waitlist in case of a cancellation.

Northern sailing waitlist tips
  • If we can confirm your booking prior to departure, we will contact you with the details.
  • If you are still on the waitlist, we recommend you arrive at the terminal a minimum of three hours prior to the scheduled departure time. If customers with confirmed spots don’t arrive for the sailing, we fill their spots with waitlisted customers.
  • You can request cabins on your waitlist form.
Southern Gulf Islands waitlist tips
  • If we can confirm your booking prior to departure, we will contact you with the details.
  • If we have not confirmed your booking within 24 hours of scheduled departure, you can still consider travelling on a first-come first-serve basis or via Thru Fare. Learn more about Thru Fare.
