Frequently asked questions

Saver fare overview
Q. What is a Saver fare? When are Saver fares available for travel to the Sunshine Coast?

A. Saver is our most affordable fare choice, and includes a free one-way reservation. Saver fares must be booked and paid for in advance, and are only available on select sailings. Availability is limited.

Saver fares are available for $39 for both standard under-height and over-height passenger vehicles on select sailings from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to the Sunshine Coast (Langdale) until January 5, 2022. Plus, when booking a prepaid Saver fare, you can add additional passengers in advance for $10 per adult, and $5 per child.

Q. Why did BC Ferries introduce Saver fares for travel from Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to the Sunshine Coast (Langdale)?

A. We introduced Saver fares on this route to provide you with more savings and greater travel certainty. Saver fares are designed to shift traffic to less busy sailings and free up space at more popular sailing times. This limited-time promotion provides those with flexibility in their travel plans an opportunity to save on their travel, and helps move traffic more evenly throughout the day. This will reduce congestion at the terminal and make it easier for customers without a reservation to travel.

Q. Are Saver fares available for travel between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay?

A. No, Saver fares are only valid for travel between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale. Saver fares include return car and driver fare between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, plus a free one-way reservation departing Horseshoe Bay. Standard fares apply for travel between Earls Cove and Saltery Bay.

Q. If I book a Saver fare, is a free reservation included both ways?

A. Saver fares include a free reservation one-way, from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale. If you would like to ensure your return sailing, you can book a separate reservation for the return trip from Langdale - Horseshoe Bay. Round-trip fares on this route are paid when departing Horseshoe Bay, or when booked in advance – fares are not collected at the Langdale terminal.

Q. Will reservation space be affected with the introduction of Saver fares?

A. No, reservation space will not be affected. Reservation levels on this route will remain the same while Saver fares are available until January 5, 2022.

Q. What sailings will Saver fares be offered on?

A. Saver fares will be offered at less busy sailing times, specifically late evening sailings after 9:00 PM. A limited number of Saver fares are available, and they are expected to sell out.

Q. Can I book a Saver fare using my Experience Card?

A. You cannot purchase a Saver fare with an Experience Card, but Saver fares offer greater savings for car, driver and passenger fares until January 5, 2022.

When booking a Saver fare, Experience Card holders can save between 15% and 38% on car and driver fares, and 7% on additional adult and child passenger fares.

Q. What happens if I book a Saver fare and arrive early, or miss my sailing? Can I travel on a different sailing?

A. If you arrive early or miss your sailing, you can use your Saver fare toward the purchase of an At Terminal fare by paying the difference between the Saver and the At Terminal fare price.

Your fare must be put towards a sailing on the same day and you will board after reserved customers in the order you arrive on the next available sailing, based on space availability.

Q. Can I change or cancel a Saver booking?

A. Yes, you can change your sailing up to one hour before the scheduled departure time of your original booking for a $5 change fee. If you change your Saver fare to a sailing where no Saver fares are available, you will need to pay the difference in price.

You can also cancel your booking up to 11:59 PM the day before departure for a refund of your fare, less a $20 cancellation fee.

Cancellation and change fee amounts will not change based on how fare in advance a change or cancellation is made.
General booking questions
Q. What happens if I have fewer/more passengers than what was booked and paid for online?

If you check-in at the terminal with more passengers than you booked and paid for, the ticket agent will charge you the additional passenger fare(s).

Q. Is there a Seniors’ discount for Saver fares?

A. BC Seniors travel free on select routes Monday to Thursday. Seniors who book Saver fares from Monday to Thursday will only be charged for the cost of the vehicle.

Q. I don’t have a credit card or internet access. How can I book a Saver fare?

A. You can pay online and over the phone using Mastercard Debit or Visa Debit. You can also visit the Horseshoe Bay terminal administration office at least two hours in advance of departure and pay with cash (subject to availability).

Q. What vehicle types qualify for Saver fares on this route?

A. Saver fares are available to customers travelling with a standard under-height or over-height private passenger vehicle, such as a car, truck, SUV, or van. Customers with under-height or over-height vehicles over 20 feet (6.10 metres) in length can take advantage of the Saver fare discount for the first 20 feet, and pay the extra length rate (per foot) for any additional feet. Commercial vehicles, buses, tour operators and travel agents cannot book Saver fares.

Q. What happens if my sailing is cancelled after I’ve checked in at the terminal?

A. We'll do our best to get you on the next available sailing where space is available if your sailing is cancelled. Scheduled sailings may need to be cancelled from time-to-time as a result of severe weather conditions, mechanical difficulties or other unforeseen circumstances.

Customers with a booking on the next scheduled departure will be loaded in advance of customers from the cancelled sailing. If we are unable to load you on the next available sailing, you will be loaded in order of arrival at the terminal.

If you choose not to travel, you will need to return to the ticket agent to check-out of the terminal. Your fares and any reservation fees will be automatically refunded to your original form of payment. Any changes made to your booking at check-in will also be automatically refunded, with the exception of transactions using forms of payment other than a credit card, which need to be processed manually before you leave the terminal.

For the most up-to-date departure information, visit current conditions and check service notices.

Q. What happens if my sailing is cancelled before I’ve checked in at the terminal, on the day of travel?

A. We will make every effort to move your booking to an alternate sailing, later in the day, based on space availability. This will occur at no cost to you, regardless of the fare you paid. Future sailings may have limited reservation space due to previous bookings.

If your booking is moved, you will be notified. If we are not able to move your booking, you will be notified in advance that your booking has been cancelled, your fares and any reservation fees will be refunded.

If you choose to travel without a booking on a later sailing, you can purchase an At Terminal fare and be loaded on the next available sailing based on order of arrival at the terminal and deck space availability.

To get a refund for a cancelled sailing, if you left the terminal without going through the ticket booth, you can also mail copies of your receipts to Customer Relations.
