COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM MARINE INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS AT SNUG COVE

Terminal construction work to begin on January 8, 2024

VICTORIA – Bowen Islanders can expect essential updates to Snug Cove’s marine infrastructure by the end of March. These improvements will ensure continued safe and reliable ferry service the community depends on for commuting to work, school, medical appointments and other travel needs.

The $3.7 million project starts on Jan. 8 and will deliver strengthened structural elements, safer walkways, restoration of damaged concrete, new access platforms for maintenance crews, and new mechanical components, among other changes.

To deliver these upgrades, a modified schedule from Tuesdays to Sundays will be required. While full-day berth closures are also required, these are being limited to weekends, and supports have been arranged to keep people moving, including:

  • Complimentary water taxi service for daily cancellations and berth closures
  • Complimentary shuttle service from Snug Cove water taxi to transit park & ride during full-day berth closures and evening sailing cancellations
  • Discounted/complimentary parking at Horseshoe Bay

The first of the three full-day berth closures will occur on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Subsequent full-day closures will follow on February 3-4 and March 9, 2024. No vehicle service will be available on these days.

“The Snug Cove terminal is used extensively by daily commuters, school-aged children, residents, emergency services and tourists and that’s why we’re working hard overnight to minimize any impact during the day,” said Stephen Jones, BC Ferries’ Vice President of Engineering. “Planning ahead during this time will help our customers enjoy a smoother travel experience.”

Over the years, Snug Cove’s berth has experienced significant vehicle and foot traffic. Being the island’s only point of access for vehicle traffic and commercial goods carriers, the terminal currently operates 15 to 16 trips per day, and approximately 5,666 trips annually.

Customers can also visit the Snug Cove project page for more information on the project: www.bcferriesprojects.ca/snug-cove-tp. Passengers are advised to check sailing schedules and travel advisories at www.bcferries.com before travelling, follow BC Ferries on X (formerly Twitter) and sign up for service notices to stay informed.
