BC Ferries launches next phase of community engagement for Sunshine Coast

VICTORIA – BC Ferries is inviting community feedback on a shortlist of potential solutions to improve ferry travel for the Sunshine Coast as part of the second phase of its “Moving Ahead Together” engagement project. BC Ferries and the Project Working Group collaborated on the development of the shortlist.

Earlier this fall, the company formed a 19-member Project Working Group representing a wide range of community and employee perspectives. The group met several times over the past two months to review community and employee input from the first phase of engagement, and to develop potential near-term solutions to improve ferry travel for the Sunshine Coast utilizing the assets currently in place.

The proposed solutions are in the early stages of development and the engagement seeks to understand which solutions the community wants to see developed further. BC Ferries is seeking feedback on potential solutions in the following key topic areas:

  • Travel Certainty – to confirm travel plans for those using the ferry service

  • Medical Travel – to reduce anxiety for those travelling for medical reasons

  • Communications – to enhance information that can make planning and travelling easier

  • Demand Management – to enhance the use of available capacity

BC Ferries will also host a virtual meeting on November 25 to provide community members with an opportunity to learn more about the list of potential near-term solutions and to ask questions. Those interested in attending can RSVP online to receive the meeting link.

Following this round of engagement, the Project Working Group will work with BC Ferries to finalize recommended solutions and next steps. Implementation of recommendations is expected to begin in early 2021. BC Ferries will continue to update the community on recommendations and anticipated timelines as the project progresses.
