The RBC GranFondo Whistler cycling event from downtown Vancouver to Whistler will take place on Saturday, September 12. Traffic modifications will be in effect for customers travelling through the Horseshoe Bay terminal before 9:30 am on that day.

Customers planning to travel on sailings departing Horseshoe Bay on the morning of Saturday, September 12, please note that Westbound Highway 1 and northbound Highway 99 traffic will be rerouted via Exit 2 to Old Highway 99, also known as Horseshoe Bay Drive, and will re-enter northbound Highway 99 at Pasco Road.

The detour will be in effect from 5:30 am to 10:30 am. We suggest customers allow enough travel time to arrive at the terminal before the scheduled sailing of their choice.

For customers travelling on sailings that arrive at Horseshoe Bay terminal before 9:00 am on September 12, traffic leaving Horseshoe Bay will be rerouted to Marine Drive through West Vancouver from 5:30 am to 9:00 am.

Eastbound heavy trucks travelling between Horseshoe Bay, Taylor Way, and southbound Highway 99 will be redirected to a temporary holding area in Horseshoe Bay from 5:30 am to 9:00 am.

Heavy trucks will not be permitted on Marine Drive through West Vancouver during this period and may re-enter Highway 1 after the eastbound lanes reopen.

BC Ferries adds late night service on Mill Bay route


VICTORIA – BC Ferries is adding four extra round trips on the Mill Bay – Brentwood Bay route tonight (Tues., Nov 16) due to the nighttime Malahat Highway closure. The vessel will sail back and forth to accommodate as many travellers as possible. Emergency response vehicles will be given priority.

  • 9:50 pm
  • 11:00 pm
Departing Mill Bay
  • 8:05 pm
  • 9:15 pm
  • 10:25 pm
  • 11:35 pm

It’s important to note the M.V. Klitsa, which provides service on the Mill Bay – Brentwood Bay route, accommodates 19 vehicles and up to 150 passengers and crew. The crossing takes approximately 25 minutes, so the ferry can provide one round trip per hour. BC Ferries expects this route will be popular over the next few days. Customers are advised to expect waits and be prepared with snacks and water.

The other daytime option for travel with BC Ferries to avoid the Malahat Highway is to sail between Victoria (Swartz Bay) and Salt Spring Island (Fulford Harbour) and then between Salt Spring Island (Vesuvius Bay) and Vancouver Island (Crofton). The Pacific Marine Circle Route is the other highway option between Duncan and Victoria.

While BC Ferries would like to provide more service between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay during the temporary Malahat Highway nightly closures, its larger ships do not fit in the docks at these two minor terminals.
