Westview terminal development

Terminal development plan for Powell River (Westview)

Background

Westview terminal is located in the City of Powell River on the Sunshine Coast. The Westview terminal services two routes, Powell River (Westview) - Comox (Little River) and Powell River (Westview) - Texada Island (Blubber Bay).

The service between Westview and Powell River is a 1 hour 30 minute crossing and a distance of 17 nautical miles. The Salish Orca operates on the route. It was built in 2017, has a vehicle capacity of 138 AEQ and can carry a maximum of 600 passengers and crew.

The service between Westview and Blubber Bay is a 35-40 minute crossing and a distance of 5.1 nautical miles. The North Island Princess is currently the vessel that services this route, which has a vehicle capacity of 38 AEQ and can carry a maximum of 150 passengers and crew. The North Island Princess will retire in 2020 and the replacement will be an Island Class vessel.

Terminal development plan

In November 2019, our Terminal Development team along with key staff from various departments at BC Ferries began the process of creating a Terminal Development Plan for the Westview terminal. The Terminal Development Plan (TDP) is a long-term plan and vision for the terminal and involves identification of key issues and opportunities, conceptual options, identification of preferred concepts and the development of an implementation schedule for future terminal upgrades.

Engaging with the community

We recognize this is a difficult time for our local and global communities due to the COVID-19 situation. Operationally we continue to safely transport vital goods and supplies to coastal communities, and we are also moving forward with our efforts to plan for the long-term future of Westview terminal. We know there is a lot of demand on everyone’s attention and energy at the moment and we thank everyone who participated in reviewing the draft concepts that were posted online between March and April.

Next steps

We will continue our engagement with local First Nations and key government agencies as we move forward with a refined concept that will be included in the Westview TDP. We anticipate that the TDP will be completed by the end of 2020 and it will be posted here for you to review once approved.
