Bella Coola, McLoughlin Bay, Ocean Falls and Shearwater terminals

Terminal Development Plans for Bella Coola, Bella Bella (McLoughlin Bay), Ocean Falls and Shearwater

In January 2018, the terminal development team began the process of creating a Terminal Development Plan for terminals on the Central Coast.

The scope of the Terminal Development Plan involved planning, creating conceptual design options, and the development of an implementation schedule and budget estimates for future terminal upgrades. The Plan will provide the framework for the phased implementation of strategies and actions to guide terminal improvements over the next 25 years. This will enable us to develop the terminals in a cost-effective, organized and efficient way.

Engaging with the Community

Our planning process involved engaging with communities and key stakeholders to gather feedback, suggestions and ideas. This included gathering feedback on draft concepts for the terminals and refining them using the feedback we received.

The Terminal Development Planning process was initiated in January 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2020.

Where we are now

Your input helped inform the preferred design that will be included in the TDP. Once the TDP is approved, it will be posted here for you to see. The Terminal Development Planning process was initiated in January 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2020.

Project update on marine structure improvements at Ocean Falls and Shearwater

Ocean Falls
In spring 2018, we completed the marine infrastructure improvements at the Ocean Falls terminal. The berth was designed for 40 years of life with minimal maintenance requirements. Some features of the improvements include transition aprons incorporated into the ramp to allow vehicles operating low to the ground and vehicles with overhangs can pass over the ramp with ease. In addition, the ramp can now support full highway legal vehicles. Marine infrastructure improvements include:

  • a new steel ramp
  • two transition aprons
  • a concrete pontoon with a transition platform
  • a mooring dolphin and two pipe struts
  • a reinforced concrete abutment
  • three new line dolphins
  • a new abutment approach road
Shearwater
In spring 2018, we completed the marine infrastructure improvements at the Shearwater terminal.

The berth consists of an existing steel ramp on a concrete abutment. The ramp is supported on a barge that has fendering on the front held by two pipe struts.

Improvements were required to accommodate the new vessel, the Northern Sea Wolf, and consisted of installing a timber deck onto the barge and repositioning the floating lead.
