Disabled Persons

If you are a resident of British Columbia and have a permanent disability, reduced fares are available (this applies to passenger fares only).  To receive them, you must present your BC Ferries Disabled Status Identification (DSI) card.  Please call us for details, or you can download the Information for Passengers with Special Needs Brochure. Passengers requiring the use of an "overheight" vehicle equipped with a mechanical wheelchair lift or ramp may travel at the posted "underheight" vehicle (or car) tariff with or without a DSI card. Group Fares

Discount rates are available to groups of 16 or more fare paying passengers travelling together on foot or in a vehicle licensed to carry 16 or more passengers (i.e. bus). To qualify you must reserve a minimum of seven days in advance of the scheduled departure. Group rates are offered on the following routes:

  • Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay
  • Tsawwassen – Duke Point
  • Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay
  • Tsawwassen – Gulf Islands
  • Prince Rupert – Port Hardy
  • Port Hardy - Mid Coast
  • Prince Rupert Skidegate

Please note that Group Fare Rates are not available on the Prince Rupert – Port Hardy, Port Hardy – Mid Coast and Prince Rupert – Skidegate routes during PEAK Season. Return to top >>

Prepaid Fares for Frequent Travellers

Prepaid fares are available for adults and passenger vehicles on many routes. Frequent travellers can access these fares by loading a minimum amount of money to a BC Ferries Experience™ Card. Prepaid fares are also available by purchasing prepaid ticket books (prices vary by ticket type and by route).

Prepaid fares are not available for travel between Vancouver Island and the Mainland; Tsawwassen and the Gulf Islands; the Inside Passage; the Discovery Coast Passage; or from Prince Rupert to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Return to top >>

Receipts

A receipt will be issued for all sales. If a receipt is not issued, or if the receipt is different from what you paid, please call (250) 381-1401 and ask for the Revenue Department. Return to top >>

Return Fares

When fares are collected one way only for return-trip travel, no proof of payment for the return trip is required. (Note that, on many routes, fares are for one-way travel only. Please check the fares pages for individual routes for information on whether fares paid are one-way or return.) Return to top >>

Seniors

B.C. Seniors enjoy free travel November 11th and Monday through Thursday except holidays noted below on presentation of a BC Gold Care Card, or either a valid BC Driver's License, BC Identification Card or Birth Certificate coupled with proof of residency in BC. Free travel applies to the passenger fare only.

Note: Special discount B.C. Senior passenger fares are available on the Inside Passage, Mid Coast, Queen Charlotte Islands and Discovery Coast Passage routes.

Mondays 
May 18, Aug 3, Sep 7 and Oct 12, 2009.

Students

On the following routes, B.C. students, ages 18 and under (excluding Post Secondary students) with acceptable I.D., can travel free between their residence and school, and to attend or participate in school and junior association education and sporting events: 

  • Swartz Bay - Southern Gulf Islands 
  • Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay 
  • Crofton - Vesuvius 
  • Chemainus - Thetis Island - Kuper Island 
  • Horseshoe Bay - Bowen Island 
  • Langdale - Gambier - Keats (residents only)
  • Nanaimo Harbour - Gabriola Island 
  • Buckley Bay - Denman Island - Hornby Island 
  • Powell River - Texada Island
  • Campbell River - Quadra Island - Cortes Island 
  • Port McNeill - Alert Bay - Sointula
  • Skidegate - Alliford Bay

On the following routes, B.C. students, ages 18 and under (excluding Post Secondary students) with acceptable I.D. can travel on school sponsored events for a special reduced rate. Note that a letter from a school official confirming the nature of the event must be presented. Please call us for more information.

  • Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay
  • Tsawwassen - Duke Point
  • Horseshoe Bay - Departure Bay
  • Horseshoe Bay - Langdale
  • Saltery Bay - Earls Cove
  • Powell River - Comox
  • Tsawwassen - Gulf Islands
  • Port Hardy - Prince Rupert 
  • Port Hardy -  Mid-Coast
  • Prince Rupert - Skidegate 

In the interests of safety, children under 12 years of age cannot travel alone on BC Ferries unless they are going to and from school or school-sponsored events on designated commuter routes. Such students must be prepared to show a valid student ID. (Note that, while underage children may travel unescorted given the above circumstances, BC Ferries cannot provide direct student supervision.)

Throughfares on Tsawwassen - Southern Gulf Islands Routes

The throughfare is the same as the Tsawwassen - Gulf Islands direct fare. It is accepted for travel between Tsawwassen and the southern Gulf Islands through Swartz Bay. Throughfare passengers travel on the Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay ferry and the Swartz Bay - Gulf Islands ferry. Return to top >>
