Temporary Closure of Duke Point Terminal

Image of Duke Point Terminal

On Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27, 2019, the Duke Point terminal in Nanaimo will be temporarily closed to replace the vehicle ramp. During this two-day closure period, sailings to and from Tsawwassen will operate out of the nearby Departure Bay Terminal, approximately a 25 minute drive away.

Customers who would normally travel between Tsawwassen and Duke Point will instead arrive at or depart from Departure Bay. A temporary schedule will be in place on January 26 and 27 for sailings between Tsawwassen and Departure Bay. There will be six arrivals and departures on each of these days and with a different sailing schedule than what is currently operating on Duke Point-Tsawwassen route.

Sailings will depart from both Departure Bay and Tsawwassen on the following schedule:

 Leave Tsawwassen (Vancouver)
 Leave Departure Bay (Nanaimo)
 Sunday, January 27

This work is part of a continued effort to improve assets and provide reliable service for customers. The vehicle ramp and apron at Duke Point have been in place since the terminal opened in 1997 and now need to be replaced. The contractor will use a barge and crane to remove the old apron and replace it with a prefabricated new one.

Every effort is being made to minimize the impact on your travel experience.  We chose these days for this temporary closure based on dates that are traditionally some of the least busy travel days of the year.

Customers travelling between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island during the two day closure can also choose to travel between Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay and Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay.

The regular schedule and service on the Tsawwassen-Duke Point route will resume on January 28.
