Community Facts

Agriculture and forestry are mainstays in this lovely countryside running along the Fraser River east of Pitt Meadows, with nine distinct communities making up the District of Maple Ridge. More than 160 km. (100 miles) of horse trails wind through the area. Golden Ears Provincial Park, a huge park north of Maple Ridge with excellent camping, fishing, swimming, hiking and biking.

  • Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. Managed by University of British Columbia Faculty of Forestry for teaching.
  • Haney House. Restored century-old homestead of one of the area’s founding families. See it on the Heritage River Walk that visits the area’s historic buildings.
  • Maple Ridge Museum. First Nations and pioneer photos and artifacts, and a close look at the railway’s influence on the area’s growth.
  • Kanaka Creek Regional Park has 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of forests, meadows and marshes with horseback riding, fishing, picnicking and caneoing and kayaking ­ and spectacular Cliff Falls.
  • The Beast. A fantastical metal horse atop the clock tower at Municipal Hall that rears up every hour on the hour.
  • Bell Irving Fish Hatchery on Kanaka Creek. Aboriginals were catching salmon on this creek 4,000 years ago. The Hatchery teaches the importance of conservation.
