Community Profile - Burnaby

Community Facts

Just 10 km. east of downtown Vancouver, Burnaby is bounded by Burrard Inlet on the north and the north arm of the Fraser River. The city is emerging as a high technology hub and is second only to Vancouver as a centre for employment. SkyTrain links Burnaby to Vancouver, New Westminster and Surrey.

  • Metrotown. B.C.’s largest shopping, dining and entertainment complex, with 450 stores plus major hotels. Connects to its own SkyTrain station with an aerial covered walkway.
  • Deer Lake Park. A green oasis in the heart of the city with canoes and paddleboats for rent on the lake. Clustered around the park is the Burnaby Art Museum, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Burnaby Heritage Village and Carousel, with more than 30 buildings and displays showing how people lived almost a century ago.
  • Simon Fraser University. Celebrated for its architecture by Arthur Erickson and Geoffery Massey, and its Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.
  • Central Park. Just one SkyTrain stop from Metrotown, an outstanding children’s playground complements pitch and putt, golf course and walking trails.
  • Gallery at Ceperley House. This fine heritage mansion was the premier country estate of its day in 1912. Today Ceperley House’s handsome details, like leaded glass and hand-craved oak beams, create a remarkable backdrop for two floors of exhibit space showcasing visual artists from Canada and the world.
