On the banks of the Nechako River, Vanderhoof was founded in the early 1900's by an American publicist looking for a place to build a retreat for artists and writers. Although the artists and writers never came, prospective ranchers came in droves. A centre for ranching and logging, the surrounding wilderness offers angling, canoeing, cross country-skiing and wildlife photography. Nearby lakes provide water fun and camping.
Vanderhoof Bird Sanctuary is considered a mecca for bird watchers. Tens of thousands of Canada Geese stop to rest on the small islands of the river. The restored Vanderhoof Village is a welcome stop for fresh homemade pie, gifts and pioneer trivia.
Accommodation is varied and the municipality operates a campground on the river.
