Community Profile - Telkwa

Community Facts

Telkwa, which is said to mean "meeting of the rivers" in the Wet'suwet'en language, is a scenic town located at the confluence of the Telkwa and Bulkley rivers. It was the main settlement in the Bulkley Valley until 1913, when the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway chose Smithers (see below) as its divisional point. Today, many of the town's residents are employed in resource industries and farming.

A walking tour of the historic town embraces 26 restored buildings, including the 1910 St. Stephens's Anglican Church; Hong Chong's Laundry and Bath House, where people could bathe for 25 cents; and the Interior Creamery, built in 1939. At the height of production, there were 235 shippers of cream in the surrounding region. The creamery's modern day successor, Northern White Dairy, produces fresh ice cream and yogurt for local consumption, and tours are available. A museum also houses artifacts from the rail and agricultural history of the area.

In the summer, a trip to the farmer's market is popular, as is swimming in nearby Tyee Lake. Excellent fishing can be enjoyed right from the river banks in town.
