Located on Kaien Island, Prince Rupert has one of the world's largest deep-water terminals. The Port is an important transportation hub for the north coast. BC Ferries, The Alaska Marine Highway System, VIA Rail and regular flights service the area. Prince Rupert is also the cultural centre of the Tsimshian speaking First Nations people. The Museum of Northern BC, housed in Chatham Village Longhouse tells the story of their 10,000 year old history. The fascinating marine history of Prince Rupert is honored at Pacific Mariners Memorial Park and a must see is the Cow Bay Waterfront, a restored heritage area now home to unique shops and restaurants.
Charles Hay, a railway tycoon, designed the City, but never saw the realization of his vision. Charles Hays died on the RMS Titanic in 1912. During World War II, 150,000 troops bound for the Aleutians and the Pacific, passed through. Visit The North Pacific Cannery Village at near by Port Edward. This museum offers restored buildings, artifacts, summer shows and tours as well as on site accommodation and food.
Prince Rupert offers a good variety of accommodation, restaurants and camping; and the golf course is excellent. Fishing, crabbing and prawning is world class. Fishing charters, kayak rentals, whale watching and archeological harbour tours are all offered.
