Community Profile - Houston

Community Facts

Before Houston was established in the early 1900’s, the area was known as Pleasant Valley. Houston was named after John Houston, the former Mayor of Nelson, BC. When the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway came into the area in 1912, the town became a tie-cutting center. The first hotel was a large tent. Not so today. Houston offers several motels, bed & breakfasts and camping.

Houston is known for great sport fishing, including steelhead, spring and coho salmon. Visitors will see the largest fly rod in the world at the Visitor Center Park. Two nearby golf courses invite visitors and Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club trails double for hiking or cross country skiing.

Local Mill and Forestry tours are also offered during the summer months.
