Community Profile - Telegraph Creek

Community Facts

Telegraph Creek, on a terrace overlooking the Stikine River, is 113 kilometres (68 miles) southwest of Dease Lake on a gravel road.

The road, which once served as a foot trail and wagon route, is a gravel road. It's winding and very steep in places — perfect for a sport utility adventure.

The Stikine River, which starts at an ice cave in the Cassiar Mountains to the north and flows through nearby Mount Edziza Provincial Park, offers great adventures for outdoor enthusiasts. Experienced canoeists, kayakers or rafters can run sections of the Stikine River as far as Alaska. No-one has every paddled its entire length, however, because of the wild, 96-kilometre (60-mile) long Grand Canyon, Canada's largest (see Tatogga & Iskut). But jet boat tours of the Stikine River provide excellent opportunities to view the force and power of the river and the Grand Canyon.

Gas, food and accommodation are available at the Riversong Cafe, a restored Hudson's Bay store. Air charter, hiking and raft trips can be arranged here.
