Community Profile - Wells/Barkerville

Community Facts

Wells - is located on Highway 26, about an hour's drive from Quesnel, just a few minutes from Barkerville Historic Town and less than an hour's drive from the world famous Bowron Lake Chain of Lakes.

The town is named after Fred Wells who discovered the richest hardrock gold deposits in the Cariboo. Fred Wells founded the famous Cariboo Gold Quartz Mine, which opened in 1933, when the rest of Canada was immersed deep into the Great Depression of the 1930's. Most of the town was built in about five years, and much of the period architecture remains today with many buildings in various stages of restoration.

Over the years, Wells has become known as an arts community. Many artists, photographers and nature enthusiasts have noticed the special quality of light here and the wonderful, crisp clean air. Wells provides the perfect location for an exciting, creative weekend getaway.

Barkerville - The 1860's live again at Barkerville Historic Town, the town that sprang to life when Billy Barker made his famous strike in 1862. Some claimed that Barkerville was the largest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco. 100 years later people are still thronging to the site of BC's largest and most improtant gold rush. Today Barkerville endures as a town of discovery. You can still follow the Gold Rush Trail and pan for gold!
