The gold revealed here in 1859 sparked the great Cariboo Gold Rush. Now historic Horsefly is a forestry centre, 60km east of 150 Mile House on the south branch of the Old Gold Rush Trail.
The Horsefly River hosts BC's second largest sockeye run. In season the river runs red with spawning salmon. The river is also noted for its catch & release fly-fishing. Hiking trails along the river lead to Horsefly Falls and Viewland Mountain. The Slate Bay Trail runs from Horsefly Lake through cedar forests to Quesnel Lake. Resorts provide fishing, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
