Seasonal Positions and QualificationsCustomer Sales and Service Representative You are a results-oriented, team-focused individual with an aptitude for customer service, computer applications, and have excellent communication skills. As a first point-of contact to the public, you work in our call centre providing information and assistance regarding all aspects of BC Ferries operations. Your positive attitude along with a minimum of six months customer service experience is an asset to the role and the organization. Customer Service Attendants
You are an energetic, customer-minded individual with strong hospitality skills and basic knowledge of health and safety practices. As a key member of a high-performance service team, you are responsible for all aspects of food service and for maintaining a clean and well-organized facility. You provide accurate and timely information to the public and effectively deal with customer feedback. Preference may be shown to applicants with FoodSafe, Serve it Right, Superhost, Occupational First Aid and food service experience. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Seafarer’s medical examination. Terminal Attendant You are a responsible, self-starter with an ability to professionally respond to customer queries. Working with the public in a fast-paced environment, you are a motivated team member, maintaining terminal buildings and grounds and performing efficient traffic control during vehicle loading / unloading. You possess a valid driver’s license and an ability to operate and maintain equipment and machinery. Lifting and moving heavy objects may be required. Foot Passenger Ticket Agent You are an energetic, customer-minded individual collecting and processing large volumes of customer fares while providing information to the public in a professional and courteous manner. You are a quick learner with ability to interpret and apply written policies and procedures while diplomatically handling customer complaints. Preference may be shown to applicants with substantial previous cash handling and customer service experience. Deckhand You are an energetic, customer-minded individual acting as a primary point-of-contact to the public. You represent the Company in a professional and courteous manner while playing a critical role in vessel operation and safety, loading and unloading vehicle and passenger traffic, and vessel maintenance. You hold a Marine Emergency Duties certificates (Parts A1, B1, and B2) and are knowledgable in safe work practices and seamanship. Preference may be shown to applicants with a Transport Canada Bridge Watchman certificate. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Seafarers’ medical examination. Med A1, B1 and B2 are required.
Engine Room Assistant You are a self-starter and a positive team player providing essential vessel safety and operation expertise. You have an ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a safe and timely manner while monitoring and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems. Preference may be shown to applicants with diesel engine training at the pre-apprenticeship level or a Fourth Class Motor Certificate. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a seafarers’ medical examination. Cook You are an energetic, multi-tasker working in a high-volume catering environment. You prepare and cook all BC Ferries’ food offerings, oversee steam table operation, and regularly maintain the galley area and equipment. You understand the impact of quality control and compliance with prescribed standards. Requirements include cook’s training, certification, and a basic knowledge of health and safety practices. Preference may be shown to applicants holding trade qualification. Successful applicants will be required to undergo a Seafarer’s medical examination. Level 2 certification is required. Warehouse Stockperson You are a focused and detail-oriented individual with excellent organization skills and a high level of accuracy. As a member of the Stores Warehouse team, you ensure proper inventory rotation while receiving, storing, and delivering inventory in accordance with established policies and procedures. You monitor inventory levels, investigate discrepancies, and further conduct inspections and general maintenance of shipping equipment. Terminal Service Attendant
You are a responsible, customer-minded, sales-focused individual with the ability to professionally respond to customer queries. You represent the Company in a professional and courteous manner while playing a critical role in vessel operation and safety by performing efficient traffic control during vehicle and passenger loading/unloading, and maintaining terminal buildings and grounds. You possess a valid driver's license and the ability to operate and maintain equipment and machinery. Lifting and moving heavy objects may be required. Terminal Revenue Clerk You are a responsible and well-organized individual, with strong problem-solving and cash handling skills. You receive and disburse cash and coin requests for operations, terminals and vessels, prepare bank deposits for all cash collected, review records and verify revenue reports from Point of Sale transactions and conduct audits as required. You receive cheques, cash and other negotiable instruments, and arrange bank deposits from individual deposits. You review, verify and audit revenue reports, investigate anomalies, and prepare records for Supervisor follow-up. You further provide revenue policy interpretations and other assistance to terminals and shipboard crews, while determining and satiating cash and coin requirements. You possess a basic knowledge of revenue policies and procedures and accounting and audit principles. You have completed basic level accounting courses in a professional designation program or course equivalent, and have two years experience dealing with large amounts of cash. Third Engineer (see also First/Relief Chief Engineer and First Engineer) You are responsible and results-driven, with the ability to verbally communicate accurately, concisely and courteously with customers and colleagues. You show a proven respect for Employer’s tools and property and an ability to direct and guide others in the trade. You conduct watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure and temperature levels, and condition of all equipment, as well as maintaining fuel, lube oil, air and water levels, taking samples, and checking all plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel. You regularly perform routine maintenance on all deck, engine room, catering and safety equipment, and assist with the overhaul of major components. You assist in the annual refit, by test-running emergency equipment, controlling stores and inventory, and training Assistant Engineers. You further record information in the Engine Room logs, complete daily inspections, and carry out pre-sailing routines. First/Relief Chief Engineer You are an innovative supervisor, with the ability to communicate and liaise cooperatively with shipboard personnel and other BCFS departments. You bring a wide breadth of technical and interpersonal abilities to a role central to the safe and efficient running of our vessels. You stand watch and monitor the operation of the ship’s machinery and equipment, including all operating systems and domestic services. You further supervise staff in scheduled maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment and engine room spaces, delegating appropriate tasks and providing constructive feedback. You bring considerable knowledge of dry-dock inspections, identifying hull and shaft conditions and ensuring watertight integrity. You further possess considerable knowledge of main propulsion systems maintenance and comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection regulations. Your background includes sixty working days as First Engineer with BC Ferries on a large vessel or high speed craft. First Engineer You are an innovative supervisor, with the ability to communicate and liaise cooperatively with shipboard personnel and other BCFS departments. You bring a wide breadth of technical and interpersonal abilities to a role central to the safe and efficient running of our vessels. You stand watch and monitor the operation of the ship’s machinery and equipment, including all operating systems and domestic services. You further supervise staff in scheduled maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment and engine room spaces, delegating appropriate tasks and providing constructive feedback. You bring considerable knowledge of dry-dock inspections, identifying hull and shaft conditions and ensuring watertight integrity. You further possess considerable knowledge of main propulsion systems maintenance and comprehensive knowledge of environmental protection regulations. Mate/Relief Master You are an effectual problem-solver with a strong focus on personal and Company objectives. You are an effective communicator, appropriately interacting with customers and colleagues. You serve as the Ship’s Executive Officer in the conduct of deck department activities including loading/unloading vehicles and passengers, ensuring the vessel is secure for traffic movement, conducting dangerous cargo inspections, and assisting with the special needs of passengers. You stand watch on the bridge, navigate the vessel, and convey vessel clearance procedures to the Master. You plan, direct and organize a crew into different watches, delegate the duties of the vessel, and provide training and discipline. You further perform administrative duties including ordering and conserving deck stores, ensuring vessel security, arranging for repair and maintenance of deck area and equipment, and completing employee time sheets, mate’s logs and various reports. You are further required to work as Master, Large Vessel when the vessel is replaced by a large vessel on this route. You possess considerable knowledge of applicable navigating equipment and techniques, and ship handling principles, stability, seamanship and deck maintenance. Your background includes six months experience as a senior watchkeeping officer within the last three years. Giftshop Retailer You are an outgoing, sales-focused individual with excellent customer service skills. Working on-board in a high-volume retail environment, you create memorable voyages through effective visual merchandizing and sales of charming giftware and souvenirs. You provide expert product knowledge to customers to maximize Giftshop sales, communicate sales objectives to other staff to encourage commitment, and perform back-up cashier duties. You develop and assist with implementation of procedures to enhance Giftshop operations, and maintain merchandising planograms with authorized changes. You train shipboard retail staff in retail practices including sales techniques, customer service, planograms, loss prevention, inventory counts and general product knowledge. You further ensure that Giftshop standards for merchandising, customer service, bar coding and stock levels are maintained or exceeded. Your other responsibilities include supervising and performing physical inventories, assisting window display staff, and recommending additional resources to meet demand.
