About BC Ferries

The Northern Expedition Story

On May 18, 2009, BC Ferries’ new vessel, the Northern Expedition, made its inaugural sailing on the Inside Passage route between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert. This was an important day for the company’s overall fleet renewal program, as the Northern Expedition is the seventh new ship to join the BC Ferries fleet since the spring of 2007.

The 150-metre Northern Expedition boasts 55 modern staterooms, accommodates 600 passengers and crew and 130 vehicles. Spacious passenger areas such as the Canoe Cafe, Vista Restaurant and the Raven and Aurora Lounges offer customers plenty of comfort as they take in the breathtaking north coast scenery during their voyage.

June 16, 2008 marked an important construction milestone as the keel for the Northern Expedition was laid at a special ceremony at FSG Shipyards in Flensburg, Germany. The vessel was launched at the shipyard on September 25, 2008 and departed Germany on January 30, 2009.  After a 36-day 9,900 nautical mile journey via the Panama Canal, the Northern Expedition arrived in B.C. waters on March 6, 2009.
